Primosten, Croatia - holiday information

Primosten Croatia – visitor information

Because of its beauty this little town, 27 km away from Sibenik, is one of the most visited tourist destinations on the Croatian coast and every year it attracts more and more visitors. Situated on a small, hill covered island Primosten was once connected with the mainland by a mobile wooden bridge. As a defence mechanism against the Turkish invasion it was fortified with a stone wall and accompanying towers. The mentioned bridge was later replaced with a mound and so the town was transformed into a peninsula. Town’s original name was Caput Cista, and in its present form the town was first mentioned in the 16th century documentation. Its unique beauty lies in the medieval architecture, typical for Mediterranean towns, surrounded by astonishing nature. So, when taking a walk through the historical centre of the peninsula you will get acquainted with the beauty of its stone houses and narrow streets surrounded by the sea, and will be able to feel the Mediterranean atmosphere. On the top of the peninsula you can take a look at some of the town’s landmarks. First, you will find the church of Sv. Juraj (church of St. George) from the 15th century, which was restored in the 18th century, and from there you can take a glimpse and check out the open sea with seven little islands that surround Primosten. At the entrance to the peninsula don’t forget to take a look at a baroque chapel from the late 18th century. The vineyards that extend through the hills surrounding Primosten are unique as well, and are worth looking at because of the specific way of cultivation. The grape vine is planted in compartments separated by little stone walls built in the technique of “suhozid” (dry wall technique). The same grape is used to produce the high quality dark wine Babić.
Primosten has a population of 3000 people whose main vocation is agriculture, fishing and tourism. Tourism started expanding in the 60ies of the 20th century, and today Primosten is one of the most famous tourist sites in Croatia. Despite the vast number of accommodation units in private apartments and hotels there is always need for a room more. Entente florale Europe, is an international award that speaks enough of the success of tourism. Primosten received the award in 2007:

On the second peninsula, covered with a thick pine forest, tourist contents, hotels and sport centres are surrounded by a gravel beach which is certainly one of the most beautiful ones on the Adriatic. The smaller one, Mala Raduča, expands through the centre of the peninsula and is surrounded by café bars, ice cream shops, pizzerias, restaurants and souvenir shops. To get to the bigger one, Velika Raduča, you simply follow the pine forest until you reach the beach and its accompanying contents; sport courts for tennis, ping pong tables, a mini golf court and a diving school.
In the centre of Primosten you can find many café and cocktail bars as well as restaurants. In most restaurants you can try out the local cuisine based on vegetables and fish specialities. We recommend restaurants  Mediteran, Dalmacija, Panorama and Staro Selo. In the evening the centre usually accommodates local musicians and singing groups of traditional Dalmatian songs – klape. You can enjoy cocktails in many cocktail bars, and if you are into night entertainment we recommend the Aurora discotheque, one of the most famous Croatian discotheques situated 2 km away from Primosten. During your stay in Primosten be sure to visit some of the agro estates in the background such as  Baćulov dvor or Jurlinovi dvori  where you can get acquainted with the traditional way of life of this area, try local specialities and find out more about olives and wines in the area. Also it is good to note that the Kremik marina, one of the most famous marinas on the Adriatic, is near Primosten, only 2 km away from the city in the Split direction.
Here you can look at the magnificent Primosten sunset:
